"McDaniel Captures First Late Model Victory at Hickory Motor Speedway" - 7/18/11

Fans came out to enjoy a night of fast paced racing action as the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series took to the track for Honda Cars of Hickory Night at the Races presented by The Catawba Science Center on July 16. Austin McDaniel captured his first Bojangles Late Model victory at the 60-year old facility after starting from the outside pole.

The No. 43 of Jesse LeFevers brought the 16 car field to the green flag for the start of the 50-lap Bojangles Late Model feature event, but was quickly challenged by the No. 12 of Austin McDaniel who started on the outside pole. They battled side by side for several laps until McDaniel cleared LeFevers as the two drivers exited turn two heading down the backstretch.

McDaniel created a sizable lead over the field until the first caution of the night came out on lap 33 when the No. 57 of Grant Wimbish and the No. 3 of Brian Ortiz made contact in turn two.

McDaniel and LeFevers continued to battle for track position at the restart.

With ten laps remaining, McDaniel had created a half of a car length lead over LeFevers. The two continued to run door to door until lap 45 when the second and final caution fell for a five car pile-up in turn two involving Wimbish the No. 5 of Bize, the No. 4 Brunelli, the No. 26 Canache and the No. 16 Fields. It was a five lap shootout when the field resumed green-flag racing.

McDaniel was able to hold LeFevers off to capture his first career Late Model victory at Hickory Motor Speedway.

McDaniel leads the chase for Late Model Stock "Rookie" of the year. He is 4 points out of 2nd and 16 points out of 1st in the season long Points Series at Hickory Motor Speedway.
